Same Day Dentures

When I was a little girl I thought that only elder people wore dentures. After all, my grandma had upper dentures, and all of grandpa's teeth were false. I never thought that I could be wearing dentures while I was still a youngster.

I was thirty three years old when I required the remainder of my teeth taken away, all nine of them. My teeth have certainly not been healthy and they were slowly removed one at a time. Except for the four front upper teeth which went all together and the new teeth were immediately set in their place and attached with the teeth next to them. But, finally they all had to go.

When the last nine teeth were taken out I had the dentures fixed immediately. I did not wish to be without teeth.

Somehow I felt it would be difficult to get used to having new teeth in my mouth after being without them for a while. Eventually, I found this to be correct. By having the dentures placed directly upon extraction, I was never without teeth and so the dentures felt as if my natural teeth.

I have to agree that having the dentures placed immediately upon extraction was difficult but only in that I could not clean them myself for around three weeks. I had to go to the dentist's office where he removed the denture, cleaned it and returned it, during the time that the gums were curing.

After three weeks I was doing this myself. In the beginning the task was an unusual one. Taking out the dentures and brushing them and replacing them. But it did have its one light moment.

At that time my youngest boy was about four years old. He wandered into the bathroom one day just as I was brushing my denture. He stood there with his eyes and mouth full open, then turned around and ran outside the house as fast as he could. He ran off the block to my girlfriend's house screaming as loud as he could "Aunt Mary, Aunt Mary, imagine what my mommy can do?" When he told her what I could do she walked him back home and we both explained dentures to him. That I was not automatically taking out my natural teeth. We still chuckle about that, so many years later.

I still believe that the best way to place your denture is soon after extraction (sometimes called same day dentures these days) because you are never without teeth. You may not ever have to go through that days of getting used to having teeth, as you would have to do if you go without dentures while your gums are healing. What amazes me most is that when I do have to go without my dentures (surgery, etc.) my jaw actually hurts as it has actually never been closed devoid of teeth. That tight close is really agonizing.

I have learned that dentures are not just for old people because they are made for young people also. As mentioned, at age thirty three I placed my upper dentures. Since then I realized that there are young ones that often have to have dentures due to accidents or illness.
